Tanah Lot Temple

Bali's Most Sacred Sea Temple — Silhouetted Against the Indian Ocean at Sunset

Tanah Lot — the name means "Land in the Sea" in Balinese — is the most photographed and most visited temple in Bali, and one of the most dramatically situated religious buildings in Southeast Asia. The 16th-century Hindu temple (pura) sits on a rocky offshore islet surrounded by the crashing waves of the Indian Ocean, accessible on foot across the rocks at low tide but cut off by the sea at high tide. The image of Tanah Lot — its silhouette against a vivid sunset sky, waves breaking around its base — is so ubiquitous in Balinese imagery that the reality can feel almost overfamiliar. Then you see it in person, with the salt wind and the sound of the ocean, and understand why it has retained its sacred significance through five centuries.

The temple is one of Bali's six holiest sea temples (kayangan jagat), believed by the Balinese to have been established by the Hindu priest Nirartha in the 16th century as part of a chain of sea temples visible from each other along Bali's southwest coast. The temple is still active — regular ceremonies bring Balinese worshippers to the site, and the sight of a procession carrying golden parasols and elaborate offerings across the tidal flats is one of the most moving experiences in Bali. Non-Hindus cannot enter the temple itself, but the surrounding cliff complex — with its walkways, viewpoints, smaller shrines and the famous sea snake (a banded sea krait living in a cave below the main rock) — gives extensive access.

The Temple & Surroundings

The main temple complex is reached via a wide path through an outer courtyard of souvenir shops, restaurants and smaller shrines — the commercial approach is unavoidable, but the temple itself rewards patience. At low tide, visitors can walk across the tidal flats to the base of the rock and enter the lower temple precincts; high tide and rough seas make the rock completely inaccessible and make the sight even more dramatic. The cliff to the south of the main temple has additional viewpoints and the smaller Pura Batu Bolong temple (built on a natural rock arch over the sea). The snake cave below the main rock contains a highly venomous banded sea krait — the Balinese consider it a guardian of the temple, and the priests conduct ritual offerings to it.

Sunset Visits

Tanah Lot's fame rests largely on its sunset — the hour before sunset, when the western sky turns red and orange and the temple's silhouette hardens against the light, is one of Bali's great visual experiences. The crowd this generates (arriving from 5pm) is equally spectacular in its own way — hundreds of photographers jostling for position on the clifftop. Arriving an hour before the main crowd (around 4pm in the October–April season when sunset is around 6pm) allows time to walk the full cliff circuit and find a good position before the rush. The clifftop restaurants and viewing pavilions above the main temple area provide elevated perspectives on both the temple and the sunset.

Getting There & Practical Details

Tanah Lot is approximately 20km northwest of Kuta and 1 hour from Ubud by private driver — the most comfortable option, with negotiated prices around 300,000–400,000 IDR (£15–20) for a return trip with waiting time. Organised tours from the main beach resorts typically combine Tanah Lot with Jatiluwih rice terraces (UNESCO-listed) or the neighbouring Pura Taman Ayun (a moated royal temple of great beauty). Entry fees are approximately 60,000 IDR (£3) per adult, plus parking fees. The surrounding areas have multiple restaurant terraces serving Balinese food with temple views — quality varies, but several are legitimate and well-positioned for sunset dining.
