Overview

Why Visit Caribbean?

The Caribbean is the world's most celebrated island region — over 700 islands, cays and islets scattered across a sea of extraordinary turquoise and cobalt blue. For UK travellers, it represents the archetypal tropical escape: white-sand beaches fringed with coconut palms, warm waters above coral reefs, rum punches at sunset and the infectious rhythms of reggae, soca and calypso drifting on a warm trade wind.

The most popular UK destinations are Barbados (direct flights year-round, excellent food and cricket culture), Jamaica (Dunn's River Falls, Blue Mountains, Bob Marley heritage), St Lucia (the dramatic Piton peaks, lush rainforest, romantic vibe), Antigua (365 beaches — one for every day of the year), the Dominican Republic (world-class all-inclusive resorts at exceptional value) and the jewel-like Turks & Caicos (Grace Bay, consistently ranked the world's best beach).

The region genuinely suits every type of traveller. All-inclusive mega-resorts in Jamaica, Antigua and the Dominican Republic offer superb value and effortless holidays. Smaller boutique islands — Mustique, Bequia, Nevis — provide privacy and exclusivity. The Cayman Islands offer world-class scuba diving. Cuba delivers one of the Caribbean's most extraordinary cultural experiences. Whatever your Caribbean dream, there is an island that perfectly matches it.

Must-See

Top Attractions in Caribbean

Barbados Beaches & Crop Over Festival

Barbados combines some of the Caribbean's best beaches (Crane Beach, Bottom Bay, Accra) with a world-class food scene, cricket at Kensington Oval and the Crop Over Festival — a Barbadian carnival tradition that culminates in Grand Kadooment Day in August, a riot of colour and music.

Jamaica — Dunn's River Falls, Blue Mountains & Reggae

Climb the tiered cascades of Dunn's River Falls hand-in-hand with strangers, trek through the Blue Mountains to the highest point on the island, visit Bob Marley's Nine Mile birthplace and dance to live reggae in Kingston. Jamaica rewards those who explore beyond the all-inclusive gates.

St Lucia — Pitons & Volcano

St Lucia's twin Piton peaks — Gros Piton and Petit Piton, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites — rise 770 metres from the Caribbean sea. The island also has the world's only drive-in volcano, spectacular rainforest zip-lining and consistently excellent boutique hotels and resorts.

Turks & Caicos — Grace Bay Beach

Grace Bay Beach on Providenciales has been voted the world's best beach more times than any other. Twelve kilometres of powdery white sand beside aquamarine water of almost supernatural clarity — plus the world's third-largest coral reef system directly offshore for snorkelling and diving.

Dominican Republic All-Inclusive Resorts

The Dominican Republic (Punta Cana, La Romana, Puerto Plata) has perfected the all-inclusive beach resort formula — extraordinary value, miles of palm-backed beaches, world-class pools and every watersport imaginable. One of the Caribbean's very best value destinations for UK families and couples.

When to Visit Caribbean

☀️

Dec–Apr (Dry Season)

The Caribbean at its most reliably beautiful — low humidity, trade winds keeping temperatures pleasant at 26–30°C, and minimal rain. Peak season; prices and demand at their highest. Christmas and New Year sell out earliest.

🌤️

May (Shoulder)

The dry season's tail end — still largely sunny with a gradual increase in humidity. Excellent value as high season ends; a good time for last-minute deals, especially in May before hurricane season concerns kick in.

🌧️

Jun–Nov (Hurricane Season)

Hurricane season officially runs 1 June to 30 November. Most years most islands are unaffected, but the risk is real — comprehensive travel insurance with cancellation cover is non-negotiable. Prices can be significantly lower; September and October carry the highest risk.

🌦️

Nov (Transition)

Late November marks the end of hurricane season and the beginning of the winter high season ramp-up. A transitional sweet spot — increasing sunshine, prices still reasonable, resorts gearing up for peak season.

Where to Stay in Caribbean

Barbados

The most "British" of the Caribbean islands in feel — a polished, sophisticated destination with a vibrant food scene, beautiful churches and chattel houses, coral stone architecture and a genuine sporting and cultural heritage. Direct year-round flights from London Gatwick on British Airways.

Best for: First-time Caribbean visitors, foodies, cricket fans, couples

Jamaica

The Caribbean's most culturally rich island — the birthplace of reggae, Rastafarianism, Blue Mountain coffee and the world's finest rum. Beyond the excellent all-inclusive resorts of Montego Bay and Ocho Rios lies a country of extraordinary natural beauty and warmth.

Best for: Culture, music, nature, all-inclusive, adventure

St Lucia

Arguably the most dramatically beautiful island in the Caribbean — lush volcanic peaks, rainforest, waterfalls and a rugged coastline punctuated with excellent boutique hotels. One of the most romantic destinations in the world; a perennial favourite for honeymoons.

Best for: Honeymooners, couples, natural beauty, boutique hotels

Dominican Republic & Cuba

The Caribbean's two best-value all-inclusive destinations. The Dominican Republic (Punta Cana, Bávaro) has the finest resort infrastructure in the region; Cuba combines its extraordinary all-inclusive beach product (Varadero, Cayo Coco) with genuinely unique cultural experiences in Havana.

Best for: Best value, families, all-inclusive, first-timers, culture (Cuba)

Need to Know

Travel Tips for Caribbean

  • Book all-inclusive packages for Christmas and New Year at least 6 months in advance — these weeks sell out completely and prices increase dramatically the later you leave it.
  • Caribbean rum is extraordinary — take the time to sample aged rum in Barbados (Mount Gay, the world's oldest rum), authentic Jamaican rum punch and Cuban mojitos at source; they are utterly different from the blended export products sold at home.
  • Travel insurance with cancellation cover is non-negotiable if you travel between June and November — hurricane disruption is not a common occurrence but it does happen, and an uninsured cancelled holiday is a financial catastrophe.
  • Many Caribbean islands drive on the left (Barbados, Jamaica, Cayman Islands, Antigua, St Lucia, Grenada) — familiar for UK drivers, making self-drive exploration straightforward and worthwhile.
  • Direct flights from UK airports operate year-round to Barbados (British Airways from Gatwick), Jamaica (Virgin Atlantic and BA from Gatwick/Heathrow) and Antigua (BA and Virgin from Gatwick) — compare charter and scheduled fares carefully.
