Cape Greco & Blue Lagoon

Sea Caves, Turquoise Water & Coastal Trails — Cyprus's Most Dramatic Natural Headland

Cape Greco — the rocky limestone headland forming the south-eastern extremity of Cyprus, 8km from Ayia Napa and declared a National Forest Park to protect its unusual coastal ecology — is one of the most dramatic natural landscapes on the island: sheer white limestone cliffs 20–35 metres high drop directly into the sea on three sides, the water in the sheltered coves below shifting from jade to turquoise to deep cobalt depending on depth and time of day, and the sea caves — accessible by kayak or snorkelling from water level — create an underwater world of extraordinary clarity and geological complexity. The Cape Greco coastline was identified as a European Geopark for the quality of its limestone formations, the fossil record preserved in the cliff faces, and the diversity of the sea-cave ecosystem.

The Blue Lagoon — the name given informally to the most sheltered of the sea cave systems below the cape's western face, where a series of natural limestone archways create a protected pool of water of exceptional clarity and colour — is the primary destination for the boat trips and kayak tours that depart from Ayia Napa marina. The combination of the turquoise water (its colour intensified by the white limestone base and the angle of the eastern Mediterranean sun), the cave formations (some extending 30–40 metres into the cliff), and the snorkelling over rocky seabeds where octopus, sea urchins and colourful wrasse are easily observed makes this one of the most rewarding short excursions on the Cyprus coast.

Sea Cave Kayaking & Snorkelling

The most rewarding way to experience Cape Greco's sea cave system is by kayak tour from Ayia Napa marina — guided tours of 2–3 hours (approximately €25–35 per person, kayaks and snorkelling equipment included) navigate the full cave network at water level, entering cave chambers where the limestone overhead creates natural vaulted ceilings, swimming through archways to sheltered coves, and hovering above the clear seabed in 3–5 metres of water. Independent kayak hire is also available from the marina for those with experience. The boat trips (larger rigid inflatables carrying 8–12 passengers, approximately €20 per person for 1.5 hours) cover more ground and reach caves inaccessible to kayaks, but the water-level intimacy of the kayak experience is superior for marine life observation. Both depart in the morning and early afternoon; afternoon departures have better light for photography.

The Coastal Trail

The coastal trail through Cape Greco National Forest Park — a waymarked path (Nature Trail E4, clearly signed from the park entrance on the Ayia Napa–Protaras coast road) that covers the full headland in approximately 5–6km — passes through juniper, mastic and pine scrub above the cliffs, with successive viewpoints across the sea cave system below and across the bay towards Protaras and the Famagusta coast to the north. The two small chapels on the headland (Agioi Anargyroi, built into a cave in the cliff face, and the ruins of an earlier chapel above it) are accessible by short detours from the main trail. The trail is best walked early in the morning before the heat builds; sun protection and water are essential. The full circuit from the car park to the lighthouse and back takes approximately 2 hours at a comfortable pace.

Sunrise & Photography

Cape Greco's east-facing aspect makes it the finest sunrise location in Cyprus: the headland's cliffs catch the first light of the Mediterranean dawn, the sea below turns from purple to gold to turquoise in the space of 30 minutes, and the view east towards the Famagusta Bay and the distant Karpaz Peninsula of northern Cyprus is clear on calm mornings. Photographers and early-rising visitors who make the 8km drive from Ayia Napa in the hour before dawn (the park is open 24 hours) are rewarded with the headland entirely to themselves — a completely different experience from the midday crowds. The sunset, though Cape Greco faces east, is visible from the cliff above Agioi Anargyroi chapel looking back towards Ayia Napa across the bay, and the evening light over the sea cave system from the headland is excellent for photography.
