July is the UK's most popular month to go on holiday — and that fact shapes everything. It's peak season for most European destinations: prices are at their highest, beaches are at their busiest, and the most popular resorts are booked out months in advance. But July is also genuinely excellent for holiday weather across a vast range of destinations, and for families tied to school holidays, it's simply the time they have.

This guide separates the outstanding July destinations from the overcrowded ones — and identifies a few long-haul alternatives that most people overlook.

📅 Book early or book late. For July, the two best strategies are: (1) book 6+ months in advance for the best availability and prices, or (2) wait for last-minute deals in May–June if you're flexible. The worst time to book July is March–April — prices are high but availability is limited.

Best European Beach Destinations in July

🇭🇷 Croatia

28–32°C

July is peak season but Croatia handles it well — the Adriatic is at its warmest (25–27°C), Hvar and Dubrovnik are spectacular, and the national parks (Plitvice Lakes, Krka) are at their most vivid. Book early and consider lesser-known islands (Vis, Korčula, Mljet) to avoid Hvar crowds.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

🇬🇷 Greek Islands

28–33°C

The Aegean and Ionian islands are in their element in July — reliably sunny, warm sea, and the evening breeze (Meltemi) keeps temperatures bearable. Avoid Santorini and Mykonos in July (extremely busy); Kefalonia, Lefkada, Naxos and Paros are far better choices.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

🇵🇹 Algarve, Portugal

28–30°C

The Algarve in July has extraordinary beaches and perfect beach weather. The Atlantic is cooler than the Med (21–23°C) — refreshing rather than warm — but the scenery (limestone cliffs, sea caves, rock arches) is unmatched. Fewer crowds than the Med, and prices are good.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

🇲🇪 Montenegro

29–33°C

The Adriatic Riviera's best-kept secret. Sveti Stefan, Budva and the Bay of Kotor are stunning in July with far fewer tourists and far lower prices than Croatia. July is peak season but the coast handles it gracefully. Extraordinary value.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

🇲🇹 Malta

30–33°C

July is warm (32°C+) but Malta's ancient capital Valletta, the Blue Lagoon on Comino, and some of the Mediterranean's best scuba diving remain excellent. A short 3-hour flight, affordable, English-speaking.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

🇲🇦 Morocco

25–28°C (coast)

Agadir's Atlantic coast is at its best in July — beach weather without the extreme heat of inland Marrakech (35–42°C in July — brutal). Agadir stays at 25–28°C thanks to Atlantic breezes. Essaouira is even cooler and beautifully atmospheric.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Best European City Breaks in July

Many European cities become uncomfortably hot in July — Rome, Athens and Barcelona can hit 35–38°C, which makes sightseeing genuinely exhausting. The best July city breaks are those where the heat is manageable or where evening culture compensates.

1

Edinburgh, Scotland

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 The best UK city break in July

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe runs from late July into August — the world's largest arts festival transforms the city into an extraordinary spectacle of street theatre, comedy, music and drama. Temperatures are a pleasant 18–22°C. The Old Town and Royal Mile are spectacular and the scenery from Arthur's Seat is among the finest in any European capital. No flights needed — 4 hours 30 minutes by LNER from London King's Cross.

2

Lisbon, Portugal

🇵🇹 Warm but manageable (27–30°C)

Lisbon in July is hot but less suffocating than Madrid or Rome. The trams, the viewpoint terraces (miradouros), the incredible pastéis de nata and the Atlantic breeze keep it bearable. The city is more atmospheric in July than at any other time — outdoor concerts, rooftop bars and long summer evenings in the Alfama district. A 2.5-hour flight from the UK.

3

Dubrovnik, Croatia

🇭🇷 Spectacular but extremely busy in July

Dubrovnik's Old Town — walls, baroque churches, marble streets — is one of Europe's great spectacles and dramatically beautiful in July evening light. The reality: cruise ships disgorge 10,000+ visitors daily in July. Visit the city walls by 7:30am before they're busy, escape to the Elafiti Islands by afternoon, and book a cable car ride for sunset views. Despite the crowds, it's still magnificent.

Best Long-Haul Destinations in July

🇯🇵 Japan

July (outside the rainy season) is excellent — summer festivals (Gion Matsuri in Kyoto, Sumida Fireworks in Tokyo), beautiful landscapes and fewer Western tourists than spring cherry blossom season. Hot (30–35°C) but Japan's air-conditioning culture keeps it bearable.

✈️ ~12 hrs

🇨🇦 Canada

Canada in July is outstanding — the Rocky Mountains (Banff, Jasper, Lake Louise) are at their most accessible, Vancouver is spectacular, and the eastern cities (Toronto, Montreal, Quebec City) offer rich culture without European summer heat. ~8–9 hrs from UK.

✈️ ~8–9 hrs

🇿🇦 South Africa

July is winter in South Africa — which means perfect conditions for a safari (animals congregate around water sources, vegetation is sparse making wildlife easier to spot) and comfortable temperatures in Cape Town (18–22°C). Excellent value. A genuinely brilliant July destination that most people overlook.

✈️ ~11 hrs

🇮🇸 Iceland

July is Iceland's warmest month (12–18°C) and the period of near-continuous daylight. The midnight sun is extraordinary. Hiking, whale watching, waterfalls (Skógafoss, Seljalandsfoss, Gullfoss) and hot springs are all at their finest. ~3 hrs from UK.

✈️ ~3 hrs

🇲🇽 Mexico (Pacific Coast)

While Cancun's Caribbean coast sees heavy summer showers, Mexico's Pacific coast (Puerto Vallarta, Oaxaca coast) is drier in July and offers less crowded beaches at lower prices. Humpback whales are present in Banderas Bay in July.

✈️ ~10 hrs

🇺🇸 New England, USA

July is peak season for New England's stunning coastline — Maine's lobster shacks, Cape Cod's beaches, Newport's Gilded Age mansions, Boston's historic streets. Warm (25–30°C), culturally rich and endlessly enjoyable. Best combined with a New York City opening or closing.
