Two of the UK's most popular holiday destinations, separated by a thin strip of Aegean sea — and constantly compared by travellers trying to choose between them. Greece and Turkey are both spectacular, both accessible, and both offer extraordinary value for UK holidaymakers. But they are genuinely different experiences, and the right choice depends on what you're looking for.

We've analysed both destinations across eight key criteria to give you a definitive guide to which is better — and for whom — in 2026.

🏖️ Beaches

Both countries have world-class beaches, but they're different in character.

Greece excels in variety and drama. The pink sands of Elafonissi in Crete, the volcanic black beaches of Santorini, the turquoise coves of Kefalonia's Myrtos, and the iconic white-pebble beaches of Mykonos — Greece's beach landscape is extraordinarily diverse. The water colour is typically a brilliant, deep Aegean blue.

Turkey has longer, wider beaches with finer sand and calmer conditions in many resorts. Oludeniz (the Blue Lagoon) near Fethiye is consistently rated one of the world's most beautiful beaches. Patara has 18km of untouched Atlantic dune beach. The turquoise coast between Bodrum and Antalya is extraordinary.

Greece Wins For:

Variety, drama, unique beach landscapes, snorkelling quality

🇹🇷
Turkey Wins For:

Sand quality, beach length, calmer family-friendly waters

💰 Cost Comparison

Turkey wins on cost — substantially, especially in 2025–2026. The Turkish lira has weakened significantly, making Turkey exceptional value for UK tourists paying in sterling.

Item🇬🇷 Greece (approx.)🇹🇷 Turkey (approx.)
Budget hotel (per night)£50–£90£25–£50
Restaurant meal (per head)£15–£25£6–£12
Local beer£3–£5£1.50–£3

For budget-conscious travellers, Turkey offers around 35–50% better value than Greece for equivalent quality accommodation and dining. Greece is worth the premium for its unique island culture and Cycladic beauty — but if budget is your primary concern, Turkey wins clearly.

🍽️ Food & Drink

Greece has one of the world's great cuisines — fresh grilled fish, mezze (tzatziki, hummus, dolmades, saganaki), slow-cooked lamb, and the finest olive oil in the world. Wine is underrated: Assyrtiko from Santorini is an exceptional white. The taverna culture — eating late, outdoors, with locals — is one of the great pleasures of Greek travel.

Turkey is equally exceptional: the kebab (in Turkey, far more varied and refined than its UK takeaway approximations), meze culture, seafood along the coast, Turkish breakfasts (an elaborate spread of 20+ dishes), and the extraordinary baklava and Turkish delight. Tea culture — strong black çay in tulip glasses — is a distinctly pleasant part of daily life. Turkey is arguably one of the world's top five food destinations.

🍷 Alcohol note: Turkey is a secular country and alcohol is widely available in resorts. However, some inland areas are conservative — respect local customs. Alcohol prices in Turkey are higher relative to other prices due to taxation, but still cheaper than UK prices.

🏛️ Culture & History

Both countries have extraordinary historical depth, but in different traditions. Greece has the ancient world: the Acropolis, Olympia, Delphi, Knossos, and countless ancient theatres and temples. The mythology is embedded in every town name and landscape feature. For classical history enthusiasts, Greece is unmatched.

Turkey has perhaps even greater historical variety: Ephesus (one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the world), Cappadocia (cave churches, underground cities, fairy chimneys), the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Troy, and the Lycian rock tombs along the turquoise coast. Istanbul alone warrants a separate trip — one of the world's great cities.

🎉 Nightlife

Mykonos is one of Europe's premier nightlife destinations — world-class DJs, international party crowd, legendary beach clubs. Santorini, Ios, Corfu and Rhodes all have active, young-skewing nightlife. If nightlife is a priority, Greece's islands (particularly Mykonos) edge Turkey.

Turkey's Bodrum, Marmaris and Antalya have strong nightlife scenes — bars, beach clubs and clubs running until dawn. But the scene is more resort-focused and less cosmopolitan than the best Greek islands.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 For Families

Both countries are highly family-friendly. Turkey edges it for all-inclusive family holidays: the large, purpose-built resorts on the Aegean and Mediterranean coast (many with enormous waterparks, kids' clubs and multiple pools) offer exceptional value for families. Greek family resorts are excellent but fewer large all-inclusive complexes exist.

Greece wins for cultural family experiences: the history resonates with older children, the Greek culture is famously warm to children, and island-hopping on ferries is a memorable adventure for families with children over 6.

🛡️ Safety

Both countries are safe for UK travellers. The FCDO has no specific safety warnings for either destination's main tourist areas. Standard travel precautions apply. Greece is EU-regulated, which some travellers find reassuring. Turkey had some security challenges in the mid-2010s (now significantly reduced) — check current FCDO travel advice before booking.

⚖️ The Verdict

🇬🇷 Choose Greece if you want...

Island-hopping culture, dramatic Cycladic scenery, authentic taverna dining, world-class archaeological sites, the best nightlife (Mykonos), and you're happy to pay a premium. Greece is more expensive but offers an irreplaceable, distinctly European experience.

🇹🇷 Choose Turkey if you want...

Exceptional value, long sandy beaches, outstanding all-inclusive resorts, a richer food culture, extraordinary historical diversity (Ephesus, Cappadocia, Istanbul), and experiences that feel genuinely different from the standard European beach holiday. Turkey offers more for less — and in 2026, the exchange rate makes it one of the best-value holidays available from the UK.
