Atlas Mountains

Toubkal, Berber Villages & the Dramatic High Atlas — 90 Minutes from Marrakech

The Atlas Mountains — North Africa's highest mountain range, stretching 2,500km from Morocco through Algeria into Tunisia — provide a dramatic natural backdrop to Marrakech and offer some of the most accessible mountain trekking in Africa. The High Atlas, rising to 4,167m at Jbel Toubkal (the highest peak in North Africa), lies just 90 minutes south of Marrakech by road — an extraordinary contrast to the city that makes the Atlas a compelling day trip, as well as a destination for multi-day trekking and Berber village immersion.

The mountains are home to the Amazigh (Berber) people — Morocco's indigenous population, whose language, traditional architecture, dress and culture remain distinctly alive in the High Atlas villages. Staying in a traditional Berber guesthouse in the Aït Benhaddou valley or the Ourika Valley, eating home-cooked tagine and mint tea, and experiencing the rhythms of mountain life represents the most culturally authentic Moroccan experience available to visitors.

Toubkal Trek

Mount Toubkal (4,167m) — North Africa's highest peak — can be summited in two days from the trailhead village of Imlil (1,740m), 90 minutes from Marrakech. The standard route ascends via the Toubkal Refuge (3,207m, where a night is spent) to the summit the following morning. The climb requires fitness and good hiking boots but no technical equipment in summer (July–September); in winter, crampons and ice axes are necessary and an experienced guide is essential. The summit panorama on a clear day — to the Sahara in the south and the Atlantic coast in the west — is extraordinary.

Day Trips from Marrakech

The Ourika Valley — a 30km drive south of Marrakech — offers a gentle introduction to the Atlas landscape: a lush, green river valley of Berber villages, terraced fields, weekly markets and small waterfalls at the valley head (Setti Fatma, 1,500m), accessible by a 30-minute walk from the end of the valley road. This is Marrakech families' weekend escape and is correspondingly busy on Fridays and Saturdays.

The Tizi n'Tichka mountain pass (2,260m) connects Marrakech to the southern oases via the most spectacular mountain road in Morocco — a switchback ascent to the pass, with views of High Atlas peaks, before descending through Berber villages to the Dadès Valley and eventually the Sahara. The medieval ksar (fortified village) of Aït Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site used as a filming location for Game of Thrones and Gladiator, lies 30km beyond the pass.
