A good holiday runs on more than a boarding pass and a hotel confirmation email. The right handful of apps, downloaded and set up before you leave the UK, can save you money on card fees, get you compensation when a flight is delayed, and stop you standing on a foreign street corner trying to mime "where is the bus station" to a stranger.
We've narrowed this down to ten apps that genuinely earn a place on your phone — not novelty extras, but tools our own team relies on for every trip. All are free to download, with optional paid tiers noted where relevant.
📶 Before you go: Download offline maps for your destination city in Google Maps, and set up your travel money card, while you're still on UK wifi. Doing this at the airport with patchy roaming is a common source of holiday stress.
Skyscanner
Flight, hotel & car hire price comparison
Still the fastest way to compare flight prices across airlines and travel agents from any UK airport. The "Everywhere" search is genuinely useful if your dates are fixed but your destination isn't — it ranks the entire world by price for your travel window. Price alerts will email you when a route you're watching drops, which is the easiest way to catch a genuine fare sale rather than refreshing manually.
Citymapper
Local transport navigation for major cities
Covers most major holiday cities (Barcelona, Paris, Rome, New York, Tokyo and dozens more) with live public transport routing that's more reliable than Google Maps in dense metro systems. It compares walking, metro, bus, taxi and rideshare side by side with real arrival times, and tells you exactly which platform or exit to use — genuinely useful for cutting confused wandering out of a city break.
Google Maps
Navigation, offline maps & reviews
The essential all-rounder, and the one app on this list that works everywhere Citymapper doesn't. The feature worth setting up before you fly is offline maps — search your destination, tap "Download," and you'll have full turn-by-turn navigation without using any data or roaming, which matters if you're on a budget SIM or somewhere with patchy signal, including rural Portugal, the Greek islands or the Moroccan Atlas.
Google Translate
Live translation, including camera & conversation modes
The camera translation feature — point your phone at a menu, sign or ticket machine and see the text translated in real time on screen — has quietly become one of the most useful travel tools available. Conversation mode handles two-way spoken translation reasonably well for simple exchanges. Download your destination's language pack in advance for offline use, essential for places with unreliable data.
Wise
Fee-free spending & the real exchange rate
A Wise (or similar multi-currency) card lets you spend abroad at the real mid-market exchange rate instead of your UK bank's marked-up rate, and typically avoids the foreign transaction fees that standard debit and credit cards charge on every purchase. Load it with euros, dollars or another currency before you travel and lock in the rate, or spend directly and let it convert automatically. Over a week-long holiday this routinely saves more than the cost of a decent meal out.
XE Currency
Instant currency conversion, works offline
A simple, fast currency converter that caches the latest exchange rate for offline use — useful for quick mental maths at markets and restaurants without needing signal. It's a smaller, more focused tool than a banking app, which makes it faster to open and use dozens of times a day, which is roughly how often you'll actually reach for it.
The Essentials for Peace of Mind
The next four apps matter less for day-to-day convenience and more for keeping your trip organised and protected when things don't go to plan.
TripIt
One itinerary, built automatically from your emails
Forward your flight, hotel and car hire confirmation emails to TripIt and it builds a single, clean itinerary automatically — no manual entry required. Particularly useful on multi-stop trips where you're juggling several booking references across different providers, and it works offline once your trip has synced, so you're not hunting through your inbox for a confirmation number with no signal.
Flighty
Real-time flight tracking & delay alerts
Tracks your specific flight — not just the route — using live data, and will alert you to gate changes, delays and likely knock-on disruption often before the airline's own app updates. Particularly useful for connecting flights, where knowing early that your inbound is running late gives you time to plan for a missed connection rather than being caught out at the gate.
AirHelp
Flight delay & cancellation compensation claims
Under UK and EU rules, delays and cancellations within an airline's control can entitle passengers to cash compensation — often £220–£520 per person — but airlines rarely volunteer this information, and claiming directly can be a slow process. AirHelp checks your flight against the rules automatically and handles the claim on a no-win, no-fee basis, taking a commission only if you're paid out.
Free calls & messages over wifi, anywhere
The obvious one, but worth including because it's genuinely the app that saves the most money abroad: calls and messages over wifi or data instead of your UK network's roaming rates. It's also the default way most European hotels, tour operators and taxi transfers now expect to communicate — many will message your confirmation and pickup details via WhatsApp rather than email.
📱 Our Recommendation
If you only download three before your next trip, make it Skyscanner to book it, Google Maps to get around it, and Wise to pay for it without giving your bank a cut in fees. Add Flighty and AirHelp if you're flying long-haul or on a connecting itinerary — between them they'll warn you about delays before the airline does, and get you compensated if it happens anyway.
All these apps depend on a charged phone: include a travel adapter in your packing list and check it works with your destination sockets and device chargers before you leave.
A Quick Pre-Departure Checklist
- Download offline maps for your destination city in Google Maps while on UK wifi
- Order and activate your travel money card at least a week before departure — some providers take a few days to post a physical card
- Download the offline language pack in Google Translate for your destination
- Forward your booking confirmations to TripIt so your itinerary is ready before you land
- Add your flight number to Flighty as soon as you have it, particularly for connecting flights
- Check your data roaming settings — an EU roaming add-on or local eSIM is usually far cheaper than pay-as-you-go roaming charges
